The Lowdown – Shout out for Producers
SHOUT OUT for some team players!
EOI’s are open to join The Lowdown production team
We are calling out for people to join The Lowdown team. This is a volunteer role.
The Lowdown has the potential to attract funding in the future – allowing this to become a paid role. If interested, this could be your opportunity to get involved and help shape the role.
The Lowdown is MainFM’s Community Service Announcements segment, pre-recorded and repeated Mondays to Fridays at 8.45am to 9am. Each 15 minute segment features community news, announcements, events and activities from the Shire and acts as an information point for community members to find out what is happening locally, with updates from council, businesses, community groups, organisations and individuals.
This is how we are thinking it will work: Each week’s Lowdown is produced by a team of two MainFM volunteers – A Researcher / Presenter and a Copresenter / Editor. One person prepares the content and script. The other co-presents, records/ edit and uploads it to Zara.
Each team of two will be responsible for producing one segment a fortnight ( or month) depending on who many people put their hand up for it.
Lowdown team members will be provided with training and resources including a template script and a template Audacity File, along with training videos.
Responsibilities
Researcher / Presenter
- Approx. time commitment 1-2 hours per week.
- Prepare the Lowdown script by; checking news@mainfm.net where you can access press releases and information. Read the various notices and press releases, selecting those that are relevant for the following week.
- Pre-record the segment with your team buddy Copresenter / Editor
Co-presenter / Editor
- Approx. time commitment 1-2 hours per week.
- Pre-record the segment with your team buddy, using the provided music bed template

- Then load the segment into ZARA.
It’s important to:
- Ensure the segment is presented consistently and in line with the station’s objectives, policies and procedures
- Have an understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and objectives of MainFM and community radio
- Have an understanding appreciation of the format and appropriate content for the Lowdown segment.
- Have a good working knowledge of pre-recording and editing. However, we can provide the training!
The Lowdown delivers important information to the listener, and hugely contributes to a sense of community cohesion and resilience – which is vital. It is a great way to contribute positively to the community, and hone your presenting, writing, producing and editing skills.
